A&P's water cooler moments: social stories of the week

RIP Twitter

Turbulent times ahead for Twitter?

The last week has been somewhat of a rollercoaster ride for Twitter HQ.

In anticipation of the forthcoming quarterly figures being released – promises such as displaying best tweets at the top of a users’ feed, started to drip-feed through.  A strange incentive for investors perhaps?  And you’d be right for thinking this.   In what could be seen by some, as a prophetic response, the hashtag #RIPtwitter started trending as users felt the change would ‘kill’ the social site.

In a last ditch attempt to win fans over – Twitter also chose to revamp their desktop log-in page – which seemed like a strange way to tackle potential audience disinterest especially given the majority of Twitter users log in via their smartphone.

Whilst we’re somewhat relieved not to be subjected to Olly Murs smug grin on the Twitter log-in page anymore - our Content Team was left wondering how these recent changes truly update and refresh Twitter and drive it forward in 2016?

And it appears the Global Marketplace would tend to agree as sighs of disappointment could be heard when official quarterly results were released this week.  Twitter reported a net loss of $90m for the last three months of 2015 resulting in a 10% fall in Twitter shares during after-hours trading.

Twitter is a still a popular platform for engaging with peers from all walks of life and is vital for connecting with the wider world.  Whilst we’re not giving up just yet, we feel Twitter have got to offer much more to users in order to keep them engaged #goodlucktwitter

Females, FMCG and Facebook

A new report released this month unveiled three big Fs in the realm of social media marketing:

#ExploringSocial – a report that follows extensive research carried out by Born Social – has shed light on how marketeers can optimise their Facebook content strategy for FMCG brand clients.

Beyonce We Can Do It

Among many sound bites to stem from the study, a key finding is that a female audience continues to dominate Facebook. Women are 14% more likely to ‘like’ a brand on the platform than men, while 51% of all users on the site are from the fairer sex.

When we focus this more tightly on FMCG brands, the power of a woman (excuse the 90s pop reference!) is not to be underestimated – the average active audience on Facebook is almost three-quarters female, at 73%. This is big news for brands and will likely lead to changes in the way clients view the platform when considering integrated comms campaigns and targeting female consumers.

As Beyoncé famously asked - Who run the world? [sic] #Girls

New Line-up For Top Gear

For those who haven’t seen the news, Top Gear have had a few more additions to their new line up. Chris Evans is the new leader of the motor loving gang and has recruited a rainbow of fame to join him on the new line of adventures.

Joining him will be Matt LeBlanc (friends), Chris Harris (Motor Journalist), Eddie Jordan (ex-formula one team owner), Sabine Schmitz (German Pro Racer), Rory Reid (YouTube Celebrity) and of course The Stig.

It has been rumoured that the new line-up will be hitting our screens on the 8th may. With such a diverse profile of presenters there is no doubt they will be entertaining, but how will it compare with the new project featuring the original cast which is being funded by Amazon. Will the new clan compare to this new mystery venture by Clarkson? The new Top Gear series will be hitting audiences first, time will tell. #TopGear
